Your next step after a wreck

After a Car Accident: What to Do, Step by Step

Three stages, from the moment of the crash to your recovery. Follow the path that matches where you are right now.

If anyone is seriously injured, call 911. If symptoms suggest a medical emergency, go to an emergency department. Accident care follows emergency care, never replaces it.

Stage 1

I'm currently at the scene

Get to safety

Move your vehicle somewhere safe if you can, then check yourself and others for injuries.

Call 911 & police

Call 911 for injuries and follow the dispatcher. Ask for a police report, even if the crash seems minor.

Exchange information

Swap names, contact details and insurance policy numbers with every driver involved.

Photograph the scene

When it's safe, snap the scene, all vehicles, license plates and any visible injuries.

Note your symptoms

Write down how you feel, even small things, and get medical care if you need it.

Safety first

Never put yourself in danger to take photos or move an injured person.

Stage 2

I'm at home and symptoms are showing

Symptoms that can appear hours or days later

  • Neck or back pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Shoulder pain
  • Stiffness

Some injuries, including concussion, aren't noticeable right away. Get checked out even if you feel fine. New or worsening symptoms need medical advice.

Call your insurance provider

Notify them as soon as possible. Stick to the facts.

Do share

  • Date, time & location
  • Drivers' contact & policy info
  • Police report number
  • Photos & repair estimates

Avoid

  • Admitting fault or saying “I'm sorry”
  • Guessing or giving opinions
  • Injury details before a full evaluation
  • Recorded statements before consulting an attorney

Stage 3

I've been seen and need follow-up care

90 min

Your first visit

Check-in, evaluation by a licensed physician, imaging as clinically indicated, and treatment. Same-day or next-day visits are typical. Follow-ups run 30–60 min.

What to bring

  • Photo ID
  • Claim number, if you have one
  • Attorney documentation, if represented
  • ER or urgent-care discharge papers

Finish your treatment

Completing your care plan supports a full recovery and helps prevent long-term pain.

Keep every visit summary, test result and prescription together, even across providers.

Can't get to an appointment? Ask about transportation assistance.

You don't have to figure out every step alone.

Practical Next Steps

Insurance and paperwork

What information should I save after a car accident?

Keep the other driver's contact and insurance information, your claim number, photos of the vehicles and scene, and any messages from an insurance company. Store everything in one place so it's easy to find when you need it.

Medical records

Why should I keep records from every visit?

Visit summaries, test results, imaging reports, prescriptions, and therapy instructions give you and your care team a clearer picture of your recovery. Keep them together, even if you saw more than one provider.

Getting to care

What if my car isn't drivable or I can't get to an appointment?

Tell the clinic when you call to schedule. TACC offers transportation assistance when needed; ask the team whether it's available for your location and appointment.

After the ER or urgent care

Do I need follow-up care if I've already been to the ER?

Follow the discharge instructions you received. If they recommend a follow-up visit, or you have symptoms or questions after going home, contact a healthcare professional. Bring your discharge paperwork so the next provider can see what was evaluated and recommended.
